From Foundations to Independent Art
The Studio Palette program is designed to grow with the student. Skills become more advanced as students develop stronger observation, technical control, creative thinking, independence, and confidence with different artistic materials.
Students are placed according to age, previous experience, interests, and readiness. The teacher may adjust the complexity of an assignment so students in the same age group can work at an appropriate individual level while learning together.
Young students build confidence with art materials while developing coordination, attention, imagination, and visual awareness. Lessons introduce color, shape, line, texture, simple composition, drawing, painting, clay, paper, and decorative projects through clear age-appropriate steps.
Students begin working more intentionally with observation, proportion, composition, color mixing, form, and technique. Projects become more detailed, and students learn to plan their work, correct mistakes, compare options, and explain their creative decisions.
Students strengthen drawing, painting, design, and three-dimensional skills while taking greater responsibility for planning and completing their artwork. Lessons introduce more complex subjects, longer projects, visual research, experimentation, and thoughtful use of references.
Teen and advanced students work with greater independence and technical expectations. They can develop a personal artistic direction, complete more ambitious projects, improve presentation skills, and prepare selected work for a portfolio when appropriate.
Age does not automatically determine level. A new student may begin with foundational assignments, while an experienced student of the same age may receive more advanced expectations. Progress is based on demonstrated skills, independence, studio habits, and readiness for more complex work.
The main Studio Palette program runs from August through May. Weekly two-hour lessons allow students to practice consistently, complete work in different disciplines, and build skills over time. Separate summer courses and creative workshops are offered in June and July.
